Brief History of Madison County, Nebraska
Madison County was established in 1856 by the Nebraska Territorial Legislature. Nestled in the third tier of counties south from the Missouri River, it spans approximately 576 square miles. The county’s landscape is a blend of uplands, valleys, bluffs, and bottomlands, with the Elkhorn Valley cutting across its northern end.
Early settlers were drawn by fertile soil and abundant natural resources. Timber once lined the Elkhorn and its tributaries, and the region’s sandy loam supported rich agriculture. Towns like Norfolk, Madison, and Battle Creek grew as railroads and civic infrastructure expanded.
