Mrs. Marsoun, the former Miss Hazel Mitchell was 30 years of age. She had been ill since June 4.

DEATH PARTS AGED COUPLE HOLT PIONEERS
MRS BENJAMIN MCKATHNIE DIES AFTER SERIOUS OPERATION
LIVED HERE 51 YEARS
CELBERATED THEIR 61ST WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MARCH 26 - JUST FEW WEEKS AGO

Mrs. Benjamin McKathnie, 79, one of this community's pioneer women, passed away early last Friday in Stuart, following an operation performed a few days previous.

Mrs. McKathnie and her husband came to Holt Co more than 50 years ago, bringing their family and settling on a barren claim 18 miles northeast of Atkinson where they lived for more than 30 years before moving to town.

A few weeks ago March 26, Mr. and Mrs. McKathnie observed their 61st wedding anniversary.

Funeral services were held at Methodist Church in Atkinson, Sunday, burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery Atkinson.

Grace Anderson was born Sept 27,1851 at White Haven, England. In 1870 she came to America with her brother and they made their home with their father who was then living at St Mary's, Penn. Mr. McKathnie, who was also born in England, came to St Mary's at the same time and there on March 26,1870 he and Miss Anderson were married. When a young girl Mrs. McKathnie became a member of the Episcopal Church.

To this union 9 children were born, 7 of whom together with their aged father survive Mrs. McKathnie. Reuben died in infancy and James died at the age of 21. The surviving children are Archie, Andrew, William of Atkinson, Benjamin of Wisner, SD; Jacob of Long Beach, Calif; Mrs. W H Hitchcock of Boulder, Colo and Mrs. Ray Aldridge of Atkinson. 13 grand children, one great grandchild; one brother John of Beckley, WV; and many other relatives and friends also mourn her passing.

For a few years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. McKathnie lived at St Mary's, Penn, where he was working in the coal mines. In 1875 they went to the mining country of eastern Kentucky, where they lived two years, then moving to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where for several years Mr. McKathnie continued his work as a coal miner.

In the year 1880 Mrs. McKathnie began her life as a pioneer on a Holt Co treeclaim 18 miles northeast of Atkinson. A one room cottonwood shanty 12 X 16 feet was the home she and her husband moved into with their five children. Here they started a new life that was strange to them- that of farming- and here Mrs. McKathnie lovingly raised her children and endured the hardships the were the lot of every pioneer mother.

For more than 30 years Mr. and Mrs. McKathnie lived on that homestead, then moved to Atkinson where they since have made their home.

All of the McKathnie children were at home to attend the funeral services.

POLICE JUDGE MORGAN DIES OF HEART FAILURE

James Morgan, 67, city police judge, died suddenly of heart failure at his home in Atkinson, Wednesday evening.

Judge Morgan had gone about his usual work with no warning of impending ailment until after noon Wednesday when he suffered an attack of dizziness and Dr Sturdevant was called. He rallied and was feeling well enough he thought to go up town but Mrs. Morgan expressed the wish that he remain at home. Shortly thereafter he was seized with the fatal attack.

Judge Morgan's sudden taking off is a grievous shock to his family and friends, who can hardly realize that one having the appearance of health and strength for more of years should be taken so suddenly from among them, no more to return.

Deceased had been a resident of Atkinson for 43 years. He was elected county judge of Holt County in1901 and served two terms, retiring from office Jan 1,1906. he was very active in local democratic political affairs.

James Melvin Morgan was born in Buchanan Co, Iowa Feb 15,1859.Here he grew to young manhood. In 1881 the family moved to O'Brien Co, Iowa and in 1883 to Atkinson, Nebr, where he had since resided. After the death of his mother in1891 he followed school teaching for a number of years, until his election to the office of county judge.

At the conclusion of his term of office as county judge he joined with his brother, W S Morgan, in the firm of Morgan Bros Real Estate and Insurance, with offices in Atkinson, and sharing at the time of his death in this business relationship and the duties of police magistrate of the city, to which office he was elected last spring.

June 2,1902 he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Beck, to which union were born three sons, Wayne, Kenneth and Foster. The eldest son, Wayne, died Jan 24,1914 at the age of 11 years. Mr. Morgan leaves to mourn his death, his wife, two sons, and his twin brother, W S Morgan of Atkinson.

W S MORGAN DIES SUDDENLY AT YORK
PIONEER RESIDENT OF ATKINSON LIVES ONLY SHORT TIME AT IOOF HOME

William S Morgan, pioneer resident and school teacher of this community, died suddenly at the Odd Fellows Home in York last Friday morning. Mr. Morgan's health failed rapidly last spring and early in June it was necessary for him to retire as township assessor and go to a hospital.

About 18 days before his death he went to the Odd Fellows home in York to live. At that time his condition had improved very much and it was thought by his friends that improvement would continue. He became seriously ill the evening before he died.

Funeral services were held at Presbyterian Church, Atkinson Sunday. Atkinson Lodge 111 Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which Mr. Morgan had been a member for years, conducted rites at the grave. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery here.

William S Morgan was born near Independence, in Buchanan County, Iowa, Feb 15,1859, and died early Friday Aug 3,1934 at Odd Fellows home at York, where he had lived only a few days more than two weeks.

Mr. Morgan was a twin brother of the late James M Morgan of Atkinson, who passed away on Dec 8,1926.

The Morgan Brothers with their mother, came to Nebraska in the early days and lived for a time near Fairbury. In 1883 they came to Atkinson and their mother took a homestead four and a half miles northeast of this city. On this farm the brothers lived with their mother for many years, moving to Atkinson after her death in 1891.

Each of these brothers was a pioneer school teacher in Holt County serving in several of the rural districts of this community in the year 1888, farmed for the History making blizzard, William was teaching in the little schoolhouse a few miles southeast of Stuart, and there, during that historic day in January, he stayed all night in the schoolhouse with the children, keeping them safely while the terrific blizzard raged.

Each of these brothers was a prominent and respected citizen of this community. Each was a leader in democratic political affairs for many years. James fro 1901 to 1906 served as county judge of Holt County. At the time of his death he was serving as police magistrate of this city. William, from 1916 to 1925, served as Atkinson's postmaster. When illness forced him to retire two months ago, he was serving the city as police magistrate and the precinct as assessor.

For several years, until the death of James discontinued the partnership, the Morgan Brothers conducted a real estate and insurance business here.

Mr. Morgan is survived by his sister in law Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan of Seattle, Wash; one niece Edith Morgan of Abbey, Sask, Canada; three nephews, Chester Farnsworth of Phillips, SD; Dr Kenneth Morgan of Walthill, Nebr. and Foster Morgan of Seattle, Wash.

His death is also greatly mourned by members of Atkinson Lodge 111, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which he was a member for 29 years.

AGED PIONEER MOTHER PASSES AWAY SUDDENLY

Mrs Matilda E Moss passed away suddenly at her home in Atkinson, Tuesday, June 5, aged 77 years.

The going of this esteemed pioneer woman came as a shock to her family, her friends, and the community in which she had lived for many years.

Her death came at the close of a busy day; the close of a busy life; with no foreshadowing illness. Preceding her just six months, and similarly stricken, her aged husband, Charles W Moss, was taken. They were Holt County Pioneers.

Mr and Mrs Moss had a good home in Illinois; and when they came here they soon created the conditions of home life about them. A school district was organized, and a school house built, and there they had Sunday School and preaching.

Mrs Moss was a loyal Christian and as active in church work (as in other things) until age and rheumatism prevented her. Her home was always the stopping place of the ministers, who preached in their school house. She made them welcome.

She loved flowers, was energetic, conscientious, always the same. She was everything good that a mother could be. Many friends and neighbors testify that she was a noble Christian woman.

During the past few weeks she was often in church and was active at home. On her last day she was very busy, ate supper, washed the dishes, sat down and passed away.

Matilda E Womack was born Feb 2,1851 in Catlinville, Macoupin Co, Ill. On Sept 25,1873 she was married to Charles W Moss. They lived in Illinois for 14 years and then with their 8 children came to Holt County, and settled near Amelia 41 years ago.

9 children survive her. They are John and Harry now living in the state of Washington; Theodore at Chambers, Audrey Edith is the wife of Mr Harry White and lives at Amelia; Charles Clarence at Oakdale; Nellie Myrtle is the wife of Charles Smith, lives 12 miles north of Atkinson; Cheever and his wife and son have been living with Mrs Moss recently; Ira H is clerk of the District Court and lives at O'Neill; Earl C is in Westfield, NJ.

The funeral was held this afternoon, Friday, June 8 in Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

OBITUARY - MOULTON

The following brief facts have been recorded on the life of Mr O E Moulton. He was born on Oct 18,1861 at Hamilton, Iowa. He accompanied his parents Mr and Mrs Chas Moulton, to Nebraska in the year 1883, establishing their resident at Atkinson.

He married Miss Rebecca Greeley in the year 1883, to which happy union there were born 5 children, of whom 4 survive, Mrs Ethel Towers of Albany, Oregon, Charles G , Dr Loss and Miss Margaret, These in company with the father and mother Mr and Mrs Chas Moulton, and other relatives and friends assembled, bow in the presence of our Lord, our maker, asking for comfort and consolation in this dark hour and may he enable us to say- The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.

For many years Mr Moulton had been an active member of the Presbyterian Church. He has also been associated with the fraternal organization that are here assembled to do honor to his memory.

His death is great loss to this community. Many have spoken of his sterling worth, that he was a man of humility living a simple life. A man among men with a high sense of honor, identifying himself with the best things of the community. A lover of his home and 8 children, devoting his best thought and effort in guiding and shaping the destinies of those who had been entrusted to his care, his wife and the mother of his children having passed to her reward on Nov 14,1900.

Our brother passed to his rest on the morning of Feb 9,1912, after a brief sickness of typhoid fever. We commit his spirit to the Lord our Savior. Who giveth his beloved sleep.

The funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church on Sunday afternoon, Rev Cunningham, the pastor, having charged.

Members of the IOOF of which Mr Moulton was a member attended in a body and took part in the services. Several members of the AF and AM of which order he was also a member attended informally.

Interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

ATKINSON MAN FATALLY HURT IN CAR WRECK
BEN NELLIS, 59, FORMER RANCHER, SUPERVISOR, DIES AT STUART
AUTOS CRASH HEAD ON
RAY HERSHEY, AINSWORTH, DRIVER OF THE OTHER CAR ESCAPES WITH SERIOUS INJURIES

C B Nellis, 59, Atkinson, former rancher southwest of this city and former member of Holt County Board of Supervisors, died Sunday, Jan 31 of injuries received in a head on automobile collision on highway No 20 a few miles west of Stuart Thursday, last week. Mr Nellis passed away in the Stuart hospital where he was taken immediately following the accident.

Ray Hershey of Ainsworth, employee of the state highway department, driver of the machine with which Mr Nellis car collided, was seriously injured and also was taken to the hospital in Stuart. However, he was released from the hospital early this week and returned to his home in Ainsworth.

Each driver was alone in his car at the time of the accident. Mr Nellis was returning to Atkinson from a trip west. Witnesses who were at the scene of the accident shortly after it happened, said that it was evident that a terrific head on crash occurred when Mr Nellis swung to the left in an attempt to pass a vehicle loaded with wood. Mr Hershey was driving westward on his way to Ainsworth in a state owned pickup truck. Both cars were nearly demolished.

Ben Nellis was one of this community's most widely known citizens. He had been a resident of Atkinson and the Green Valley community for 25 or 30 years. At the time of his death he lived at the White hotel in this city, where he was employed as night clerk.

Mr Nellis and his family came to Holt Co from Iowa, and moved to a ranch southwest of Atkinson where they lived for many years and then moved to town. In 1922 he was elected to the Holt Co board of supervisors, representing the 6th district. In 1924 he was re elected to the board, but soon afterward he resigned because the county adopted new boundaries for supervisor districts and his residence was then outside the district which he was elected to represent. He became a member of the masonic lodge at Correctionville, Iowa in 1907.

The funeral service was held at Presbyterian Church, Atkinson, Monday, Feb 1. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Atkinson. All members of his family were here for the funeral.

Charles Benjamin Nellis was born on Feb 3,1877 in Ptotawatamie Co, Iowa, and died at Stuart, Jan 31,1937 at the age of 59 years, 11 months and 8 days. His death was the result of injuries received in an automobile accident near Stuart.

AGNES ALFS O'DONNELL IS LAID TO REST HERE
FORMER ATKINSON WOMAN DIES AT HER HOME NEAR WALL, SD, RITES AT ST JOHN'S

Mrs M J O'Donnell, the former Miss Agnes Alfs, who lived near Atkinson from 1884 until 1906, passed away at her home near Wall, SD, Friday, Dec 1 at the age of 65. She was a sister of Mrs Anna Siebert, and Hugo Alfs of Atkinson, John Alfs of O'Neill, and Toto Alfs of Wall. Her husband is a brother of Anthony O'Donnell who lives near here.

Funeral services were held at St John's Lutheran Church in Atkinson Monday. Interment was in Woodlawn Cem.

Before the body was brought to Atkinson for burial, a memorial services was held in Wall, the community auditorium being used because no church there was large enough to accommodate the great number of neighbors and friends that she had in that vicinity.

Agnes Alfs was born Oct 11,1874 in Clayton County, Iowa, and passed away at her home north of Wall, SD, Dec 1,1939, aged 65 years, 1 month and 20 days.

In the spring of 1879, together with her parents and other members of the family, she moved to Lancaster County, Nebr and in the spring of 1884 they came to Holt County. She remained here with her parents until 1906 when she went to Pennington County, SD, where she took a homestead and lived the remained of her life.

She was united in marriage to MJ O'Donnell, on May 1,1916.

Besides her husband those who mourn her departure are one sister, Mrs Anna Siebert of Atkinson, three brothers, John of O'Neill, Hugo of Atkinson, Toto of Wall, SD. Also surviving are two nieces and five nephews, and a host of friends and neighbors.

Mrs O'Donnell was a tireless worker and ministered to the entire community by her kindly help and counsel. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her. She was a member of the Lutheran church and maintained her faith to the end.

The following article in regard her life at Wall is contributed by a friend who lives in that community.

Agnes as she was known to every one, homesteaded near Cedar Butte, north of Wall, SD in the spring of 1906 and started residence in the fall of the same year.

She was married to M J O'Donnell, who homesteaded in the same vicinity, in 1916, and together they built a comfortable home on the site of Agnes' first residence. She and her brother Toto had lived on adjoining homesteads where she cared for Toto's house prior to her marriage and afterwards Toto shared the home with her and Mike.

Having no children of her own, she was Aunt Agnes to the children of the community. Mrs O'Donnell possessed an unusual knowledge of useful home helps therefore her council and help was often sought. She was always available when a neighbor needed help and distance, mode of travel, or time spent, never prevented her from lending a helping hand to the sick and unfortunate, with no thought of compensation other than the satisfaction of duty well done.

Mrs O'Donnell was a member of the Lutheran Church and lived a useful and Christian life. By her death the community loses a good citizen, a helpful neighbor, and a true friend.

When told that she could not live, she said, All must die. I am not afraid to go, and when she heard the call of the Grim Reaper she went like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lieth down to pleasant dream.

Ogle, Elisha M

OBITUARY - OGLE

The following sketch of the deceased was taken from historical and biographical sketches of Williams county, Ohio. Elisha M Ogle was born in Carroll County, Ohio, Sept 16,1839 and is the 7th child of a family of 9, 3 of whom are yet living, born to William and Isable Lyons Ogle, who were natives of Jefferson County, Ohio, and Washington County, Penn. William Ogle's parents moved to Jefferson County, Ohio, at an early period in the history of eastern Ohio, and he was among the first born children of Jefferson County. He was reared a farmer. He and family moved from Carroll County to Williams County, Ohio in 1850. Locating on Section 1 in Northwest Township. Mr Ogle here engaged in clearing and farming, and this was his home until his death, which occurred in the spring of 1863. He was one of the early setters of North West Township, although not among the first. He was a hard working and industrious man; was a Captain in the State Militia while a resident of Carroll County, and was a man self made in every respect. His wife survived his death until April 1881, when she, too, died. Elisha M Ogle came with his parents to Williams County when 11 years old, and this has ever since been his home. He received a common school education, and, Oct 22,1861, enlisted in Company K, 68th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as private. They left Camp Chase in time to be present, although not actively engaged, in the battle of Fort Donelson. From here he went to Crump's Landing, where he was taken sick. After remaining at the hospital at Camp Dennison for a time, he received a furlough, went home, and then rejoined his regiment while they were at Boliver, Tenn. From here, he was in all the movements of his regiment, until he was wounded at the battle of Atlanta, on the 22nd of July, 1864., where he was shot directly thought the head, the ball entering below the right eye, and passing out back of the left ear. He was left for dead on the field of battle, and was so reported to his comrades. On the retreat of the union forces, he was taken prisoner, sent to Atlanta, and from there to Andersonville, remaining at the latter place 7 months, where he saw the suffering that only those know who realized Southern prison life. He and one other, one dark and rainy night, climbed the fence, and by a miracle, escaped the guard, took to the swamps, and, after traveling all night, found they were within 80 rods from where they got out. The next night, they started again, and continued this some 5 or 6 days, when they were recaptured by a detachment of Hood's army, and were then sent to Macon, Ga, where they remained 2 months; and on Lee's surrender, were paroled, and finally regained their liberty. Mr Ogle reenlisted, and was veteranized in Dec 1863, when his first enlistment had expired. He received his final discharge from the service at Camp Chase June 20,1865, as corporal. After the war, he returned to Williams County, and engaged in farming. He was married Oct 1,1867 to Miss Amanda Starr, and, in 1875 was elected to office of county treasurer, reelected in 1877. He moved his family to Bryan in 1876 and in 1878 became a partner of Simeon Gillis in the proprietorship and publication of the Bryan Press. Mr Ogle is a republican in politics; a member of the Presbyterian Church; and he and wife are parents of two children- Wilbur and Maud. Mr Ogle owns the old homestead, consisting of 160 acres, besides 83 acres in Florence Township and town property in Bryan.

The above sketches Mr Ogle's earlier life. He came to Nebraska in 1886 settling on a homestead in Green Valley precinct. Health failing, he gave up farming and came to Atkinson about 8 years ago.

Great grief came into his home in 1893 when his daughter Maud, 17 years of age, was taken by death. They brought her to Atkinson and buried her in Woodlawn Cemetery.

For 7 years, Mr Ogle was an invalid, and unable to help himself, sitting in a chair all this time, as the result of a stroke of paralysis. But such suffering could not always endure, though he was patient and sweet spirited during this period of time. Death came to relieve his sufferings at 7 o'clock Saturday morning, Sept 2,1911.

The funeral was held from the house at 2 o'clock on Sunday, conducted by Rev Angell, his former pastor. In death he was peaceful as his life scarred with hardships had been, and he was laid to rest in the Woodlawn Cemetery, survived by his wife and son who remain to cherish his noble memory.

He is also survived by an older sister who lives in Ohio.

MR GILLIS RECALLS EXPERICE OF E M OGLE IN THE CIVIL WAR

Editor Press - the Bryan (Ohio) Press

The announcement of the death of Elisha M Ogle, starts in my mind a trail of remembrances of this somewhat queer, and eccentric character. Having become acquainted with him on his arrival in this county in 1850; having grown to manhood in the same neighborhood; having attended religious service regularly at the old Eagle Creek Presbyterian church during our boyhood days, enlisting together in the United States service; eating from the same haversack; drinking from the same canteen and sleeping under the same blanket for many moons; and associating together in business in later years, gives me the right to assume that there are few if any who knew him better than do I. Passing without notice his boyhood days which were occupied by assisting his father in clearing a farm of its native timber, we arrive at the 20th day of Oct 1861, when on our way home from attendance at the old church above referred to, he said to me "I am going to Bryan, Tuesday, with a load of wheat, come over and go with me and we will enlist, Ed Evans is enlisting a company of infantry, we will go with him." I assented and Tuesday found up standing at the show case in Dr H C Long's drug store in the building now occupied by Henry Kreusch; He signed the enlistment paper and I placed my name immediately under his. We were examined by Dr H C Long, and then went over to Elon Langel's office and were sworn into the United States service for three year unless sooner discharged. On our way home that evening he said to me, now we are enlisted let us make it for the war regardless of time, unless we get knocked out. I replied all right I am with you to the end. He then suggested that as we did not know what we were going into that we agree each with the other that while in the service neither of us would touch intoxicating liquors. I assented. He then said let us go one step farther; you have never played cards; I have and know that cards like whiskey, do not place one in the best company; let us agree that while in the service neither of us turn a card. I replied, "that is easy for me." Each of us kept our promises, and I always felt grateful to him for the thoughtful suggestions of that evening. The promise to remain in the service kept us from thinking of leaving the service and prevented homesickness; the abstinence from intoxicating liquors and cards kept us from excess, detrimental to health, and gave us time to more carefully prepare our food, and look after more perfect sleeping arrangements. I, as he had intimated, got knocked out before the time when reenlistments were in order; he however, showed his determination by being the first man in his company to place his name on the reenlistment roll as a veteran.

Unfortunately he did not have the measles during his childhood so as was almost invariable the case he must have them in later life and especially in army service. We left Camp Chase for the front on Sunday morning and after being on the cars and river steam boat continuously we landed just below Ft Donelson, in a snow 2 inches deep, Friday morning at daylight, and soon after were in our assigned position in the investing line around the outside works of that Fort. Friday night it snowed again, Saturday night was intensely cold, and Sunday night there fell a shower of rain, such as seldom seen in the north and during all this time the entire army was without other shelter than that afforded by their blankets. On Sunday morning the Fort with all its property and men, 14 thousand surrendered. On Monday a march was made and we were assigned place in a last years corn field, and by the time the tents were up the mud was fully shoe top deep. We procured brush from nearby woods, tramped the brush in the mud and then placed wet cornstalks and there were none other obtainable, over the brush to level up, this with our wet blankets finished our bed. I then turned my attention to my Bunkie, Ogle. I found him lying on his face on an eaten corn stalk, fully accoutered his blanket in a roll over his shoulder, and his knapsack on his back, I told him I had his bed ready for him, he replied that he had dragged himself just as far as he was going to, that he would not move a muscle to save his life. I procured assistance, carried him into the tent and laid him down on the wet blanket; two of us, one on either side laid down beside him. And we covered up with other wet blankets. The fact that we had been marching gave us no opportunity to dry the blankets during the day. When we awoke the next morning he had a most beautiful display of measles. We cared for him a few days as best we could, but before the measles had run their course, he was, ordered to a house over in the town of Dover, which it was intended to use as a hospital; but on his arrival there was no furniture, beds or fire, he caught cold the measles went to his lungs, with the result that he was incapacitated for service for 5 or 6 months. TRIBUTE OF A COMRADE

(Continued from last week)

He dragged himself around with the company and in the field hospital for 2 months, when he was place aboard a hospital boat and sent north. On the way down the Tennessee River his condition was such that the attendant though him dead, but he rallied and finally was sent home on sick furlough.

He was offered a discharge from the service, but pluckily refused to accept. On partial recovery he returned to the field, and did valiant service, until the battle of Atlanta, Ga, he received a gunshot wound through his head. The ball entering just below his right eye and emerging on the cord on the left side of his neck. He was on the advance skirmish line when he received the wound, and as the rebels were close upon him when shot, he was taken prisoner, and went upon the army rolls as killed in battle; and for 10 months was mourned as dead by his family and friends. The evening of his capture he was taken into Atlanta, Ga, and placed, with other prisoners, in a vacant house where he spent a night. The next day he was forwarded to Andersonville, prison, and placed in a hospital stockade, where he remained until in December following, when he and another scaled the fence and tried to make his way north. He was out 8 days, traveling nights and hiding during the day, and living on such stuff as could be procured from the Negroes, or by foraging. Just after the fateful battle of Nashville, when Hood's dissolving army was on its retreat south, on the evening of the 8th day, just as the sun was casting its last rays, Gen Wheeler filed his cavalry command off the road, and went into bivouac immediately, in the rear of his hiding place, so close to him that there was nothing to do but surrender. Wheeler after questioning him as to who, he was and how he came to be there, and being informed that he and his comrade were prisoners escaping from Andersonville, ordered that they be given good care, adding that they were good men or they would never have succeeded in getting there Wheeler gave them horses to ride and took them with him as far as Macon, Ga, where they were turned over to the keeper of the Confederate prison; where he remained until the close of the war. He always had only words of praise for Gen Wheeler, and his men, and felicitated himself on his change from Andersonville to Macon. Though in the hospital at Andersonville, the prison at Macon was much the better.

In speaking of his experience immediately following his wound, he said, "When I realized the location of my wound I entertained no thought of living. That night as I lay down I had no thought of seeing another day. Lying there with my blood bespattered face I soon fell asleep, and slept soundly; awaking in the morning. I was never so surprised in my life than I then was to find myself alive. I got up watched the blood from my face, and from that minute banished all thoughts of dying from my mind."

He was rather stoical, and never showed feeling or fear. During the long dangerous siege of Vicksburg, after weeks of constant danger from the enemies, bullets, a comrade said to him, "Lish, I wish I did not care any more for this than you do, this is killing me by inches, if it goes on much longer I will die". Replying he said, "Why my dear sir if you were half as badly scared as I am you would run". He was always ready for duty, went forward without questioning and without a murmur. After a life of varied experiences and full of vicissitudes, he rests.

Williams county never sent a braver, or more loyal soldier into the field and no more faithful comrade was ever had by anyone that had I in Elisha M Ogle.

AN ATROCIOUS MURDER

Lusk (Wyo) Herald

Yesterday morning while John Hoover was riding the range looking for cattle he found a dead man lying on the prairie 4 miles north of Lusk. He immediately came to town and made known the news and Coroner Louger, C E Partridge and a Herald representative went out with a rig to bring the body in. On arriving at the place ghastly sight met their eyes. There lying on his back with blood spattered face and an ugly wound in his forehead told only too plainly that a murder of the most revolting nature had been committed.

From papers on the dead man's person it was found he was a stranger here, having arrived on Sunday from Nebr. In his pocket was a letter he had written to his brother at Atkinson, Nebr, and from it his real name was learned, it being Ray Parnell.

It seems the dead man left here on Monday in company with Dan Daley and James Jordan, intending to go out and see John H Davis, who works for W H Bonsell and whom he was acquainted with. As he got no farther than the place where he was found dead,, future evidence must be made to tell why.

Yesterday Deputy Sheriff Barber went out and arrested Dan Daley, but Jordan could not be found and we understand Daley says Jordan committed the murder. At the inquest held this morning Daley was not allowed to testify, but was taken to Douglas and put in jail, pending the capture of Jordan, who will no doubt be caught shortly as officers are on his trail and the sheriffs of the surrounding counties have been notified to be on the lookout for him.

Just a day prior to the finding of the dead man word was sent in here that James Lane, a one armed man herding for Lee Miller, had been found in a pasture north of here in an unconscious condition. He was brought in and had a large scalp wound on his head, a part of his left ear was torn away and he was otherwise scarred and bruised. At the inquest held today he stated that Daley , Jordan and Parnell came to his camp and after a couple rounds of drinks from a bottle, he knows nothing further, not even knowing how he got hurt nor how the man got killed.

G C Parnell, a brother of the murdered man, arrived today from Atkinson, Nebr, and will take his brother's remains home for burial. The sympathy of the community goes out to him and all his relatives in this sad and awful taking away of his brother.

Obituary

Death always bring sadness, sorrow and sympathy, but very few have been sadder, than that of little Katherine Faye Pelcer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Pelcer. She was born November 7,1911 and died Saturday, August 30, 1913, aged 1 year, 9 months and 23 days.

She was a sweet and pretty child, her mother's darling and her father's pet, her only sister's beloved playmate, the joy and pride of a happy home.

Every available medical assistance was given and all that loving hearts and tender hands could do was done. But it seemed from the beginning of her illness that God had chosen her for his kingdom. Only those who have little ones of their own can appreciate the deep sorrow the loss of this loved one from the hearts, life and home occasions. The parting is sad almost beyond endurance, but the Divine Ruler has made it possible because human agencies cannot prevent it. But how sweet and comforting it should be to those wounded hearts to know that this beautiful little flower in all her innocence without sin or guile is now an angel in Paradise. With the image of her fair face forever impressed in the hearts and minds of her loved ones the remembrance of her transient life here, their loss is very hard to bear, but, O the comforting message of the Savior, Suffer little children to come unto me for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven. So we laid her tenderly away mid flowers she loved so well to await the day when God has promised there shall be no more good-byes.

Little Katherine was sick nineteen days with Cholera Infantum.

The funeral was held Monday at 2 o'clock from the home of her Grandparents, Mr and Mrs William Pelcer, Rev W S York of the M E Church officiating. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

In the early 60's Mr and Mrs Price moved from Pennsylvania to Minnesota where they resided a few years from where they moved to Iowa from thence to Nebraska and have been residents of Atkinson for more than 30 years.

Always of a kindly, affectionate nature, Mrs Price endeared herself to many friends, but it was in the immediate circle of her own family that the blessed influence of her life was most felt. Holding high ideals, loving the beautiful and good, she was herself an inspiration to right living and in every respect was an ideal wife and mother. She was a dear, home loving woman, cheerful and optimistic and like her husband, who preceded her to the home beyond, just ten weeks, was a true pioneer.

Early in life she accepted Christ as her savior and united with the church and has lived a consistent Christian life.

Go thou thy way, and I go mine,
Apart, yet not afar;
Only a thin veil hangs between the pathways where we are,
And "God keeps watch between thee and me"
This is my prayer
He looks thy way, He looketh mine,
And keeps us near.

GEORGE PURNELL SHOT

George Purnell, for many years a resident of Emmet township, was shot and fatally wounded by Jack Hoff, alias Jack Hatfield, in the home of Mr and Mrs T F Marren in Atkinson about 9 o'clock last night.

From what we learn the two men were in the home of Mr and Mrs Marren and Huff accused Purnell of taking a bottle of liquor from him and became very abusive and after cussing Purnell a while shot him. The shooting was done with a 32 caliber revolver the ball entering the right side and penetrating the right lung and liver and lodging in the back. After the shooting Huff said that he would go for a doctor and left the house and immediately made himself scarce.

Sheriff Grady was notified and went to Atkinson on the 10:30 train and organized a searching party and the man hunt was kept up all night. Huff had been working for Henry Hockstraw at Tonawanda all summer and the sheriff went out there after the shooting, but he failed to show up in that vicinity. The sheriff then went in an auto. When he reached Stuart he learned that Huff had been captured 3 miles east of Newport by Lee McClurg, Pat Murphy, Elmer Hanson and Joe Hytrek, of Stuart, and Henry Stansburg, night watchman at Atkinson. When he was approached by the posse he offered no resistance. He was turned over to Sheriff Grady and brought to O'Neill this afternoon and is now confined in the county jail.

JACK HOFF ALIAS HATFIELD IS THE MAN WHO DIED THE SHOOTING
TROUBLE OVER BOTTLE OF WHISKEY
PURNELL IS FATALLY WOUNDED IS ABOUT 56 YEARS OLD

George Purnell was shot Wednesday night at the home of Thomas Marrin in Atkinson and probably fatally wounded by Jack Hoff, alias Jack Hatfield. These two went to the Marrin home and were drinking, and Hoff missed a bottle of whiskey and accused Purnell of taking it, and after a few words drew his revolver, and fired, the first shot missing, the second striking Purnell in the right side and going through a point of the liver also penetrating the lung and then passing through the kidney and lodging in the back. Hoff insisted that he had used a blank cartridge and if Purnell was hurt he would go for a doctor, and he then left, those present presuming he had gone for a doctor, but he failed to come back. Sheriff Grady and County Attorney Hodgkin was then notified and went up to Atkinson and spent the night in searching for Hoff but not until eight o'clock the next morning was he located on the road within three miles of Newport. He was placed under arrest and brought here Thursday afternoon and is now in jail to await the outcome of the shooting.

GEORGE PURNELL DIED

George Purnell, who was shot by Jack Huff alias Hatfield, in Atkinson on the 19th as a result of an argument over a bottle of liquor, died from the wound on the 22nd at Atkinson.

Upon hearing of his death Coroner Dr E T Wilson went up to Atkinson where on Saturday he and Dr Douglas of that place held an autopsy over the body which revealed the fact that a 32 caliber bullet had penetrated the liver, a part of the right lung, the upper end of kidney and lodged just under the skin in the back.

An inquest was held at the same time, Sheriff Grady empanelling jurors, W T Hayes, Otto Thompson, Wayne Warner, Zed Warner, Joseph Matousek and John Alfs, who found "that the deceased came to his death at 1:30 o'clock a.m. Aug 22,1914 as a result of a shot fired from a revolver in the hands of Jack Huff, on the evening of Aug 19,1914, and that in their opinion this said act of shooting was done feloniously.

Huff is now in the county jail awaiting preliminary hearing which has been set for Friday, a complaint charging first degree murder having been filed against him. It is understood that M F Harrington has agreed to defend Huff.

George Purnell, the deceased, was about 57 years old and has been a resident of Emmet township for a number of years. He leaves a wife and three small children to mourn his death. He was buried in the Atkinson cemetery last Sunday.

GEORGE PURNELL DIES SATURDAY
AT ATKINSON AS A RESULT OF WEDNESDAY'S SHOOTING

George Purnell of Atkinson, died last Saturday morning, from the effects of a gun shot wound inflicted by Jack H Hoff, also known as Hatfield on the previous Wednesday evening.

Sheriff Grady, County Attorney Hodgkin and Coroner Dr E ? Wilson went to Atkinson and held an inquest. Previous to holding the inquest, Dr E F Wilson of O'Neill and Dr Douglas of Atkinson held a postmortem finding that a 32 caliber bullet had entered on the right side between the 9 and 10 rib passing through the upper end of the kidney and lodged just under the skin in the back.

The verdict of the coroners jury was as follows: That the deceased came to his death at 1:20 o'clock am Aug 22 as a result of a shot fired from a revolver in the hands of Jack Hoff on the evening of Aug 19,1914.

It is our opinion that said shooting was done feloniously".
WT Hayes, Zeb Warner, Wayne Werner, Joseph Matousck, Otto Thompson, John Alfs

The autopsy was held at the home of John Matthews, where the deceased was taken the morning following the shooting.

The deceased leaves a wife and three small children under four years of age. He also had several grown children by a former marriage. He and his wife had been working on the P J Murphy farm, 6 miles west of Atkinson and he had come to town to get a separator repaired and put in shape for threshing. he also had placed an order with Frank Campbell for a new Rumley Separator.

George Purnell was a man who had many friends in and around Atkinson where he had run a threshing machine for more than 25 years. He was not a quarrelsome fellow, and at no time courted trouble and the testimony at the coroners jury showed that he did not show any anger previous to the shooting.

Hoff will be arraigned for a preliminary hearing at 10 o'clock today before County Judge Carlson.

The funeral of George Purnell was held Sunday from P J Murphy residence 6 miles west of Atkinson and the body laid to rest in Atkinson Cemetery.

HEART ATTACK FATAL TO MRS ROBERTSON
RITES TO BE HELD THIS AFTERNOON FOR ONE OF THIS COMMUNITY'S EARLIEST PIONEER WOMEN

Mrs J A Robertson, one of Atkinson's earliest pioneer women, passed away suddenly at her home in this city Sunday night about 9 o'clock. A short time before her death she suffered a heart attack, she was 81 years of age.

Mrs Robertson lived in this community almost 60 years. From a farm 9 miles northeast, she and her husband moved to town 36 years ago. Her husband died in 1916 and Mrs Robertson continued to reside here, living alone for many years at her home in the northeast part of town. She enjoyed fairly good health until shortly before her death.

Funeral services will be held at the Robertson home this afternoon. Chapter BU of the PEO Sisterhood will have charge of the service at the grave in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Lida M Sutcliffe, was born at Moundsville, Wis, June 21,1858 and passed away at her home in Atkinson on Sunday, Nov 5,1939 at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 14 days. She was the last surviving member of a family of ten children.

She was united in marriage on Sept 18,1879 to John A Robertson, also of Moundsville, Wis, and as a young bride she came west with her husband to settle in a new land. They came to Holt County in 1880 and took a homestead 9 miles northeast of Atkinson. There was no railroad serving this community at that time, and the village of Atkinson consisted of two dwelling houses and two business places, a store and a blacksmith shop.

After living on the farm for 23 years, they moved to town in Oct 1903, and made their home. Mr Robertson passed away on Aug 2,1916.

Mrs Robertson was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of Chapter BU of PEO Sisterhood. Until recent years she was active in church work and the affairs of various local women's organizations.

Her death removes from this community another of those sturdy pioneers whose fearlessness, faith, thrift, and industry formed the foundation on which was based the progressive development of the great plains into the nation's greatest agricultural section.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs Abbie Hilts of Baker, Oregon and Mrs Sylvia Webb of Globe, Ariz; and a number of nieces and nephews who live in Iowa and Wisconsin.

MRS MARY ROSENBERRY

Mary Gracey was born in Penn, July 4th, 1846, had resided there until grown. She married Frank Rosenberry and they first moved to Ill but returned to Penn for a time. Their next move west was to Polk Co, Nebr, and later to Hall Co where she has since made her home with the exception of a few years spent in Panoka, Alberta, Canada.

Her death occurred Saturday, Sept 19 at the Frank Dobrovolny home 14 miles southwest of Atkinson, where she had been cared for since last spring when a stroke of paralysis rendered her almost helpless. She had but a few surviving relatives.

Mr Dobrovolny who had made his home with the Rosenberry's most of the time since he was 12 years of age, and Mrs Dobrovolny, who had known and befriended the deceased in her illness since her residence in Canada, were perhaps nearer to her than anyone else. She suffered a final stroke Tuesday of last week and did not regain consciousness in the few days before her death.

Mrs Rosenberry was a member of the Methodist Church and the funeral services were held in that church in Atkinson, Sunday, Sept 20. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
