Villa Marks

WIDOW OF JOHN A. MARKS DIES IN 97th YEAR

Mrs. Villa MARKS, 96-year-old widow of John A. MARKS, Civil war veteran, died early this morning at her home, 903 West Fifth street. Death, resulting from complications attending infirmities of her age, followed a lingering illness. Villa A. WAGNER was born May 7, 1843, in Huntington county, Pennwylvania, and married John A. MARKS Dec. 24, 1865, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania. Nine children were born of their marriage. They came to Nebraksa in a covered wagon in 1880, locating on a farm in Fillmore county. Several years later they moved to a farm in Hamilton county, the family home until 1906, whenb Mr. MARKS retired from farming and they came to this city. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. E. T. EDWARDS, this city, and Mrs. Luretta BROCK, Hastings; three sons, John V., Guthrie Center, Ia.; Edward S. MARKS, this city, 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild and two brothers, Jacob WAGNER of Fremont and Chris WAGNER of Houstontown, Pa. Her husband died Apr. 12, 1916, and two sons and two daughters also preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Friday afternoon in the Geddes funeral home. Burial will be in the family plot in the Phillips cemetery.

HOLD RITES FOR MRS. JOHN MARKS

Funeral services for Mrs. Villa MARKS, nonagenarian widow of John A. MARKS, Civil war veteran, were held yesterday afternoon at the Geddes funeral home. Rev. D. F. KOHL, pastor of the First Christian church, conducted the rites and Mrs. D. E. BURGARD and Miss Alma STEINHAUS, accompanied by Mrs. Hall RENNER, sang two hymns. Six grandsons and great grandsons, L A. LEONARD and Neal McKIBBEN, Orland MARKS, P. L. BILLINGER, and Clarence McDOWELL served as pallbearers with burial beside the grave of her husband in the family plot in Phillips cemetery. Attending the funeral from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. Ed. MARKS and son Orland of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Verle HIGGINS of Clinton, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. P. L. DILLINGER of Scanton, Ia., Hazel and Dorothy MARKS of Guthrie Center, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Clarence McDOWELL of Trumbull and Mr. and Mrs. CLAYTON of Central City.

Christina Margarite (Gulzow) Matthiesen

MRS. MATTHIESEN IS DEAD: NATIVE OF GRAND ISLAND
Stroke Fatal to Well Known G. I. Woman; Services Tuesday

Mrs. Julius MATTHIESEN, 67, a native of this community, passed away shortly after one o'clock this morning at her home, 610 West Louise street. Mrs. MATTHIESEN had enjoyed fair health until last Sunday evening, when she sufferes a stroke. Formerly Christina Margarite GULZOW, Mrs. MATTHIESEN was born May 15, 1872, on the old GULZOW farmstead south of the city, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry GULZOW. She married Julius MATTIESEN in Grand Island Feb. 1, 1889, and they settled on a farm three miles south of the city. Mr. MATTHIESEN passed away Mar. 21, 1938, and since that time his widow had made her home in the city. Early in life Mrs. MATTHIESEN was baptized in the Lutheran faith, and was a faithful attendant at St. Paul's English Lutheran church. She was a member of the Mccabee lodge, the W. B. A. Pioneer Club and the Ladies of the Sons of Hermann lodge. Mrs. MATTHIESEN is survived by three sons, William of Lyman, Neb., Henry of Doniphan, and Julius MATTHIESEN of Silverton, Ore.; by three daughters, Mrs. Herman KNUTH and Mrs. Lawrence HANN, both of this city, and Mrs. Joe REYNOLDS of Honolulu T. H.; by two brothers, Hans and William GULZOW of this community; by four sisters, Mrs. Will BROOKS of Omaha, Mrs. Mary THESENVITZ of Alda, Mrs. Nick WERNER of Doniphan, and Mrs. Frank STAUSS of this city; by thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Besides Mr. MATTHIESEN, Mrs. MATTHIESEN was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Claud STARLING, who passed away in 1917, and by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry GULZOW. Funeral services will be held at the Livingston-Sondermann funeral home Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. The Rev. Dr. C. B. HARMAN, pastor of St. Paul's English Lutheran church, will conduct the services. Interment will be in the family space in Grand Island cemetery. Visitation hours will be at the funeral home Monday evening between the hours of seven and nine o'clock.

HOLD SERVICES FOR MRS. MATTHIESEN

Funeral rites for Mrs. Christina MATTHIESEN, life-long resident of the community, were held at the Livingston-Sondermann funeral home yesterday afternoon. Rev. C. B. HARMAN, pastor of St. Paul's English Lutheran church, conducted the rites and Mrs. Ernest HAACK sang two numbers. Mrs. F. J. TITT played the accompaniments. Burial was in the family plot in Grand Island cemetery. Members of W. B. A. lodge attended the services in a group and served as a guard of honor from the funeral home to the cemetery. Herman HEHNKE, Juergen RIEF, John THOMSSEN, Alber SCHOENSTEIN, J. M. HANSEN and Sherman LASSEN served as pallbearers. William MATTHIESEN of Lyman and Mr. and Mrs. Will BROOKS of Omaha were here for the funeral.

Samuel Marsh

RITES FOR SAMUEL MARSH TOMORROW

Samuel Barker MARSH, 61, millman at the Union Pacific shops for 22 years, died late Saturday afternoon at a local hospital. He resided at 315 North Washington street. Mr. MARSH was born May 31, 1878, on the family homestead near Doniphan, youngest son of William Harrison and Ann Elizabeth BARKER MARSH. He grew to manhood in the Doniphan community where he was graduated from the Doniphan High school. Later he attended the Fremont college, after which he taught school for several years. He was affliliated with the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America. On August 14, 1914, he married Grace Gerturde BURGER whose death occurred in 1915. A daughter was born of their union. Mr. Marsh married Genevieve May PAULK, Wood River, on Apr. 24, 1917. Two children were born, one dying in infancy. Mr. MARSH preceded him in death in 1937. Surviving him are his daughter, Gertrude Fay MARSH of Washington, D. C., and son, William Robert MARSH, this city; a brother William H. MARSH of Doniphan, and three sisters, Mrs. Jane BOWDEN of Doniphan, Mrs. Winifred KENDERDINE of Mayfield, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Mrs. W. G. SMITH of Doniphan. Fueral sercies will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Geddes funeral home. Rev. Carl KINZLER, pastor of the Nazarene church, will conduct the rites and burial will be in Grand Island cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 o'clock tonight.

Harry P. McWilliams

McWILLIAMS RITES TUESDAY

Harry P. McWilliams, 69, retired salesman of the Brinn-Jensen Co., and a veteran of World War I, died early this morning in a local hospital. Mr. McWilliams had been in failing health for the last nine months. The family home is at 323 South Plum. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the chapel of the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Mosher, chaplain of the Veterans Hospital, will officiate. Burial is to be in Grand Island Cemetery. Friends may call fraom 7 to 9 o'clock this evening at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Harry Paul McWilliams was born May 4, 1894, at Kansas City, to Harry and Katherine Hallett McWilliams. He received his schooling and gew to manhood in the city of his birth. In 1913 he became a salesman for the Brinn-Jensin Company. With the exception of the time that he srved his country during World War I, he was in the employ of the company. Mr. McWilliams and Maybelle Stahr were married Feb. 10, 1926, at Omaha. The following year they came to Grand Island to make their permanent home. Mr. McWilliams was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was affiliated with Lodge No. 604 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; Hall County Post No. 1347 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and with Grand Island Post No. 53 of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maybelle McWilliams; two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Claudius Mundt

MR. MUNDT DIES AT 81

CAIRO - Claudius Mundt, 81, a longtime area resident, died this morning in an area hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Apfel Memorial Chapel at Cairo with burial in the West Lawn Cemetery at Grand Island. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo. Mr. Mundt was born to Henry and Anna Edwards Mundt Oct. 9, 1881, at Clinton, Ia. The family moved to Manning, Ia. when he was 11 and he grew up there. On Dec. 20,1906 he married Amanda Pauline Lammers of Upland. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1958. Mrs. Mundt died in 1961. After their marriage the couple farmed in Iowa until 1918, when they moved to Upland. They lived in Franklin County until 1927 when they moved to a farm near Lexington. In 1947 the moved to a farm near Grand Island, and later moved to Cairo. Since the death of his wife, he had lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cranford. Mr. Mundt was baptized in the Lutheran faith as a child. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Cranford of Cairo, Mrs. Martin Keeler of Wood River, Mrs. Leo Marick of Lexington, and Amanda Mundt of Greeley, Colo.; three sons, LaVern and Erline Mundt of Greeley, Colo., and Clarence Mundt of Lexington, 23 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; a brother, John Mundt of Lexington , a sister, Mrs. Amanda Puck of Manning. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, a sister and two grandchildren.

Bertha Martin

RESIDENT 43 YEARS DIES

Mrs. Bertha A. Martin, 84, a resident of Grand Island for 43 years, died Wednesday afternoon in a local hospital. Her home was at 618 W. 12th. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home, with Rev. Laurence Davis officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Martin, the former Bertha Edwards, was born in North Bend, Nebr., Nov. 28, 1878. Her parents lived on a farm near that town. She taught school for several years before coming to Grand Island in 1920.
She was married in 1921 to Asa W. Martin, who survives her, as do several nieces and nephews.

Catherine McKenzie

DEATH OF AGED WOMAN

Mrs. Catherine McKenzie, a former resident of Giltner passed away at Hayes Center April 12 at the age of 98 years, 7 months and 9 days, death being due to transient paralysis and senility. Burial was made in Giltner cemetery Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Hamilton having charge of the services at the grave. Three sons and three daughters are among the surviving relatives: Levi Snider of Grand Island, Thomas Snider of Cairo, Samuel Snyder of Hayes Center, Mrs. George Wabel of Grand Island, Mrs. John Carl of Denver, and Mrs. John Stafford of Ashland, Montana.

FORMERFORMER GILTNER WOMAN, AGED 98, PASSES AWAY

Mrs. Catherine McKenzie, former resident of Giltner, passed away at Hayes Center, April 12, at the age of 98 years, 7 months, and 9 days. Death was due to paralysis and senility. Burial was made in Giltner cemetery Wednesday afternoon, April 14, with Rev. Hamilton in charge at the grave. Three sons and three daughters survive. They are Levi Snider, Grand Island; Thomas Snider, Cairo; Samuel Snider, Hayes Center, Mrs. Geo. Times Republican Hayes County, NE April 22, 1926

Catherine Penticoff was born in Ohio September 2nd, 1828, and passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. McKenzie at Hayes Center, April 12th, 1926, at the age of 97 tears, 7 months and 10 days. When about fourteen years of age, she with her parents moved to Pennsylvania, where she met and married Levi Snyder, and shortly after their marriage the young couple moved to Freeport, Illinois. About 52 years ago Mrs. Snyder, with her husband, moved to Hamilton County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded not far from Aurora, later moving to Giltner where they resided for many years. 17 children were born to this marriage, of whom 5 died in infancy. Twenty four years ago Mrs. Snyder was left a widow, and in 1910 she was united in marriage with William McKenzie, only to be left a widow again a few years later. For the past eight years Mrs. McKenzie has made her home with her daughter, Susan C. McKenzie, at Hayes Center. She was a woman who met the trials of life with fortitude and patience-a pioneer of sterling character. Catherine McKenzie leaves to mourn her departure 8 children and 5 grandchildren, As follows: Mrs. Susan McKenzie of Hayes Center, Mrs. Margaret Carl of Chicago; Mrs. Amanda Wabel of Hamlet; Thos. Snyder of Woodriver, Nebr., S.W. Snyder of Stratton., Mrs. Ellen Wabel of Hamlet., Mrs. Emma Stafford of Selway, Mont., Levi Snyder of Hayes Center., Orville and William Snyder of Hayes Center., Alonzo Snyder and Charles Rima of Grand Island, and Mrs. Sadie Espenzie of Rock Springs, Wyo., are the grandchildren. Mrs. McKenzie was laid to rest at Giltner, Ne.

Mrs. B. N. Miller

DEATH OF MRS. B. N. MILLER

After an extended illness for a number of years, Mrs. B. N. Miller, residing at 312 West Ninth street, passed away at her home at 1:20 o'clock this morning, death resulting from paralysis and a complication of other diseases. For the past year her health had been particularly impaired during which time she suffered from partial paralysis. The deceased ws born on January 28, 1864, being 55 yers, two months and fourteen days old at the time of her demise. Besides her bereaved husband she is survived by four dauhters, Mrs. Ethel Roe, of Surprise, Neb., Mrs. Lola Spencer, of Phillips, , Mrs. Vallie thomas, of Phillips, and Miss Nola Miller, of this city. She is also survived by two brothers, two sisters and an aged father. Funeral srvices will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 o'clock from the residence, 312 West Ninth street, and at 2 o'clock from the Methodist church in Phillips, Rev. J. R. Martin will officiate. Interment will be made in the Phillips cemetery. The sympathy of a host of friends is extended the bereaved ones in their loss.

Seth Mobley, Jr.

In this city, August 29th, 1873, at 8:30 a. m., Seth, infant son of Seth P. and Maggie T. G. Mobley, aged 3 months and 15 days. In this sad affliction, the bereaved parents, Brother Mobley and wife, have our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy. All the fond pride and hopes centered in their only child to be swept away by the cruel hand of Death, is an affliction to cause an agony of grief that none but the sufferers can feel. Again, we assure brother Mobley and his wife of our earnest sympathy and condolences.

Herbert Mayer Jr.

Herbert F. Mayer Jr., 68, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Kleine Funeral Home. Mr. Mayer was born Sept. 14, 1934, at Grand Island to Herbert F. and Linda (Rathman) Mayer Sr. Survivors of the immediated family include his wife, Katharine "Toni" of Grand Island; three daughters, of Los Angeles, of Las Vegas; a sister, of Grand Island; and a brother and sister-in-law of Grand Island. Also surviving is one grandson. He attended school in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and received his degree in business administration. He coninued his studies at the University of Nebraska, graduating from the School of Law. While at the university he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and was in the ROTC. He was also a member of the golf team. He served in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant. He married Katharine "Toni" Sothman on Sept. 3, 1964, at Grand Island. Mr. Mayer practiced law in Grand Island for 15 years with the Mayer & Mayer Law Firm. As a real estate broker; he established Associated Realty, developed two subdivisions, the Normandy Estates and the Brentwood Subdivision. He also built the Normandy Apartments, and the Brentwood Town Homes. He was a member of the St. Stephens Episcopal Church and the Riverside Golf Club, of which he was past president and was a champion golfer. He was preceded in death by his son, Herbie in 1981. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association Great Plains Chapter or St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

Linda Mayer

Linda R. Mayer, 96, of Grand Island died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Tiffany Square Care Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the church. Mrs. Mayer was born on Nov. 6, 1906, on a farm northwest of Grand Island to Hans and Maria (Schuett) Rathman. She was educated in Grand Island Public Schools and studied piano at the Grand Island Conservatory of Music. She married Herbert F. Mayer, on Nov. 25, 1930, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church Women, League of Women Voters and the Liederkranz. She loved flowers and gardening. European travels and gourment cooking. She and her husband shared their love for the piano. Survivors include two sons of Grand Island; one daughter of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and one sister. He was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson; two sisters, Glenna Demaskey and Evelyn Gibbs; and two brothers, Ed and Fred Rathman.

Everett G. Myers

Everett G. Myers, 77, of Cairo, died Saturday, November 5, 1988 at Grand Island. Services were Tuesday Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Lew Kaye Skinner officiated. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Cairio United Methodist Church, The Cairo Quick Response Team Or The American Cancer Society. Mr. Myers was born, November 13, 1910, on a farm near Cairo, the son of Louis and Lena Hargens Myers. He grew up in the Cairo area, graduated from Cairo High School in 1928 and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1932. Mr. Myers then entered the cattle business with his father and brother. He married Lucille Schuett on January 20, 1937, at Lexington. He was in the Myers family's cattle business all his working career. At the time of his death he was in partnership with his son. He was a member of the Cairo United Methodist Church. He had served on the rural school board and had been a member of the Elks Lodge and Liederkranz Society, both in Grand Island. Mr. Myers was known locally for his interest in base baseball and other sports. Survivors include his wife; a son of Cairo; a daughter, of Boelus, his mother of Cairo, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a sister, of Cairo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin and a grandchild.

Leo May

Leo B. May, 75, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Revs. Harry Kurtenbach and Walter Phelan officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with a 7 p.m. rosary. Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans, Central Catholic High School or St. Mary's Cathedral. Mr. May was born on Feb. 21, 1922, at Axtell to Michael and Matelda (Richenberger) May. He began his education in Hastings and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Grand Island. After his education, he joined the Army on Nov. 5, 1942. He attended cryptology school and anti-submarine warfare school in Langley, Va. He served as an air traffic controller in Guam during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 9, 1946. He married Francis Marie "Mickey" Mentzer on Aug. 8, 1946. He worked for Sears Roebuck Co. in Grand Island for 25 years. After his retirement, he loved to make bread to take and share with veterans at the Veterans AffairsMedical Center. His wife died in 1987. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Elks Club. Survivors include two sons, Bob of Atlanta, Ga., and Jim of Lincoln; one daughter, Katherine VanTrump of Green Bay, Wis.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mike of Portland, Ore., and Howard of Corvallis, Ore.; and two sisters, Jean Kelly and Mary Kathrine O'Shea, both of Terryboone, Ore. He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter, Mary B. Larson in May 1997; two brothers and one sister.

Virginia McHugh

OMAHA -- Virginia N. McHugh, 81, of Omaha, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Memorial services will be on Friday at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Omaha. Crosby Burket Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Gravesides services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Tom Ryan will officiate. Mrs. McHugh was born on Jan. 14, 1917, at Fairfield to Edgar and Bertha (Jacobs) Nevins. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1935. She married Harold McHugh in 1938 in Omaha. They lived in Grand Island and Denver. Mr. McHugh died in 1963. Survivors include three sisters, Bernice Rohlff of Douglas, Wyo., Fay Andrews of Omaha and Shirley Schafer of Plattsmouth.

Monica E. Morrow, 80, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at the Lakeview Rehab and Nursing Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Ord Cemetery at Ord. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Children's Home or at the donor's choice. Mrs. Morrow was born on March 9, 1917, to Patrick and Elizabeth (Hill) Wray at Spalding. She married John T. Marrow on Feb. 17, 1936, at a farm near Scotia. They farmed there for 32 years. In 1967, they moved to Grand Island where she worked for Nightser Bakery for 10 years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and playing cards. Survivors include six sons, Jack Morrow and Jerry Morrow, both of Grand Island, Dan Morrow of Ashton, James Morrow of St. Libory, Robert Morrow of Norfolk and Larry Morrow of Sarasota, Fla.; two daughters, Mary Kvetensky of Grand Island and Joanne Reents of Valley; 21 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Paul Wray of Ord. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 24, 1973; a daughter, Patricia; four grandsons and a granddaughter.

Alvira A. Martin, 83, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 12, [998, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Tim Anderson will officials. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Mrs. Martin was bom on April 26, 1914, at Grand Island to John and Minnie (Stuhr) Cornelius. She was educated in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1932. As a young woman, she worked at Wolbach's Department Store. She married Joseph Martin on May 15, 1937, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Grand Island. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and Girl Scouts and was a Brownie leader. two daughters, Ruth Ann (Mrs. Byron) Skeen of Grand Island and Margaret "Sue" (Mrs. Robert) Cordes of York; eight grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Shirley of Albany, Calif.
