John Friend

Old Solder Found Dead.

Bridgeport, Neb., June 7.---John Friend, an old soldier, was found lying dead near a fence on his place near Angara last Friday. The supposition is that he was struck by lightning, althought there was very little electrical disturbance that day. The body was taken to Grand Island for interment.

Submitter's Note: John Friend, a former member of the Grand Island GAR when he lived there from 1880-1900. He's butied at the Grand Island City Cemetery in the GAR Section. According to some GAR transaction done in the late 1890s when some of his children died, namely, Hattie Maud, Alcinons S., Lawrence H., and Wray Friend were buried in the old section of this cemetery in unmarked graves.

Ida M. Friend

FRIEND---At her home, 3034 South Towner street, January 17, 1931, Ida M. Friend, age 69 years. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. E . H. [Mable] Wynant, of Jackson, Mo.; Mrs. Seth [Emma] Peebles, of Edgarton, Wyo.; Mrs. Chas. [Laura] West, of Auburn, Wash.; five sons, Joseph A. Friend, of Santa Ana, John [M. Friend], of Newport Beach; Floyd J. [Friend], of Angora, Nebr.; George H. [Friend], of Kansas City, Mo., and W. L. Friend, of Yucaipa. Funeral service will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Harrell and Brown Funeral home 114 West Seventeenth street, Rev. James H. Howell, pastor o the Church of Christ, sophisticating.

Submitter’s Note: Ida M. Friend, daughter of George and Anna (Beightol) Straub. She had lived in Hall County, Nebraska since 1871 with her father and siblings. She married John Friend in August 1880 in Grand Island, Nebraska. John died in May 1911, buried at Grand Island City Cemetery in the GAR section. She moved to Orange County, California in 1920 with some of her children mentioned in the death notice above. She buried at Central Memorial Park in Santa Ana, California.

Robert Gustus Frohberg

DEATH of LONG TIME RESIDENT of GRAND ISLAND

The many friends of the family were pained today to learn of the death fo Mr. Rober Gustus Frohberg which occurred at his home at 8:35 o'clock last evening, death resulting from a sudden heart attack. Mr. Frohberg, in spite of this advanced years, was very active and had enjoyed good health at all times. Last evening he complained of feeling somewhat tied and retired early. A sudden attack of heart trouble resulted in his demise. On Saturday last he was attending to business affairs down town, as usual. Mr. Frohberg was born at Saxony, Germany, on March 9, 1835, and was 84 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Amercia in June 1863, landing at Boston, Mass. In September, 1870, he came to this city and has since that time continued to make this city his home. For many years he conducted a tailoring establishment in this city and was quite active in civic matters, being one of the signers of the petition for the incorporation of the city. He was also a charter member of the Liederkranz. Mr. Frohberg had the distinction of having attended the Ford theatre, at Washington, on the night on which President Lincoln was assassincated. On April 4, 1873, in this city, Mr. Frohberg was uinited in marriage to Miss Julia Gisil, his faithful wife, who survives him. To this union there were born six children, three of whom have preceded the father in death. The surviving children are: Mrs. Ralph Miller, of Chicago, Miss Edna and Carl, who reside at home. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from the residence, 122 West First street, the Rev. A. A. Smith officiating. It is requested that no flowers be sent. The deep condolence of a host of friends is extended the family in their bereavement.

Julia Fuerstenau

Julia Caroline Fuerstenau, 80, a resident of the Nebraska Veterans Home, died Sunday, June 1 (1986). Services were Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mueller officiated. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials were suggested to the church. Mrs. Fuerstenau was born July 30, 1905 at Cairo, the daughter of Julius and Anna Harder Runge. She lived with her grandmother, Caroline Harder, and received her education at District 31 school and in Cairo. She was a 1924 graduated of Cairo High School. She also attended Kearney State College. She married William Fuerstenau on July 21, 1926, at Grand Island. They farmed southwest of Cairo until 1931, when they moved to Grand Island. She had worked at Dreisbach's, Clayton's Drug Store, and had been a clerk at Meyer's Jewelry Store. Mr. Fuerstenau died November 15, 1952. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Liederkranz Ladies Society, the Women's Division of the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors included two daughters, Mrs. Dean (Naomi) Erickson of Grand Island and Mrs. James (Judy) Holechek of Lincoln; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five brothers, Lawrence, Elmer, and Irvin Runge, all of Seattle, Wash., Arnold of Papillion, and Walter of Ravenna. She was preceded in death by four brothers.

Wiley Ferguson

Melvin Wiley Ferguson, 76, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Libory's Catholic Church in St. Libory. The Revs. Thomas Ryan and Marty Egging will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Friday at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. Mr. Ferguson was born on March 6, 1922, at Lynchburg, Va., to Wiley and Nora (Rice) Ferguson. He was educated at Lynchburg and moved in 1941 to New York, where he became a professional boxer. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Utah and at Kearney. He married Bernardine McEntee on Jan. 13, 1944, at Eddyville. He was transferred to the U.S. Army infantry in March 1945 and served one year in Germany and France. He toured Europe with a GI show, "Carmen," in June 1945 and returned to the states in March 1946. He worked for Fairmont Foods in Kearney until 1967, when he moved to Grand Island. He worked as a security guard at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant until retiring in 1979. He moved to the Grand Island Veterans Home in March 1995. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1347 of Grand Island. Survivors include his wife; one son, Arthur Ferguson of Tarzana, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Edna Sherman and Estelle (Mrs. Dan) Smith, both of Lynchburg, and Louise Carr of Alexandria, Va.

Marvin S. Fry

Marvin S. Fry, 81, of 3720 W. State St. Apt. D7 died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Norfolk. The Rev. Dean Vaughn will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Bassett Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 123 of Bassett. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Home for Funerals in Norfolk. Mr. Fry was born on Aug. 26, 1916, at Irvington to Samuel and Mathilda (Petersen) Fry. He attended school at Bassett and graduated from Rock County High School. He married Mildred Gilg on April 26, 1943, at Ainsworth. He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman during World War II. He farmed and ranched in Rock County for a number of years and later owned and operated motels in Scottsbluff and Liberal, Kan. He moved in 1965 to Norfolk, where he worked for Dudley's Laundry until 1988. He moved to Grand Island in April 1997. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard of Independence, Mo., and Brent of Grand Island; three grandchildren; and one sister, Maudie Mauch of Sun City, Ariz. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Hattie F. French

CENTRAL CITY -- Hattie F. French, 92, of Central City died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at Community Care of America in Central City. Memorials are suggested to the Central City Library, the Salvation Army or the donor's choice. Solt Funeral Home of Central City was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. French was born on Aug. 1, 1905, in Norfolk to Julius and Martha Kell. She owned Kell Grocery Store in Norfolk with a sister and a brother until moving to Central City in 1946. Survivors include one daughter, Norma Burchard of Palo Alto, Calif.; three grandchildren; four sisters and one brother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Presley; two sisters and a brother.
