I am interested in obtaining information about Civil War Land Grants in Buffalo County, Nebraska. My husband's great grandfather was in the Illinois Company M 7th Cavalry (Union Army). We've been told that the reason he was in Nebraska in the 1880 census of Divide Twp, Buffalo County, Nebraska was that he had come to claim a goverment land grant or homestead land that was given to Union soldier that fought in the war. Any information would help.

ARMSTRONG, GRAHAM, GRICE, ROBINSON, ROUSCH posted by Sue Gray on Monday, May 23, 2005

Seeking information on my great-grandparents and their family. David H. and Phebe I. (GRAHAM) ARMSTRONG farmed for a time in Buffalo County. During that time they had the following family members - Sadie Lunetta ARMSTRONG (later married Stephen Henry ROUSCH) and in later years lived in Hawthorne, CA; Willis Emerson ARMSTRONG (in later years lived in CA); Mary Jane ARMSTRONG (later adopted by a family by the name of GRICE and ended up in Kingman County, Kansas, where she married Hadden ROBINSON); twin boys Henry Edwin (my grandfather) and Fredrick Erwin, who died in 1886. During the time the Armstrongs lived in Nebraska, they had one other daughter, Frances Celestial, who we understand died in 1890. Phebe (my great-grandmother) died in childbirth on 14 Apr. 1887 while in Nebraska and we understand was buried with her baby in an unmarked grave in Cedarview Cemetery at Doniphan, NE. We also think that Frederick Erwin is buried in the same location. We do know that David Armstrong is buried in the Old Soldiers Home in Quincy, IL.; that Haddan and Mary Robinson and my grandfather are all buried in Kingman, KS.
